4/29/13 Reflection

This week’s session was truly illuminating and got the critical thinking juices flowing. Trying to correlate the articles to Slumdog Millionaire was not an easy task, but going through the process as a class allowed for several ideas to blossom, and correlations to be made between the cultural representations and subtexts within the space of SM. I enjoyed Jameson’s article and its rejection of a utopia, where a utopia functioned as a manner of helping us make sense of our ideological boundaries and to realize our limitations, thus revealing our incapacity to imagine what a utopia is. I enjoyed our class discussion of an ideal utopian society; it was interesting to see that everyone’s descriptions varied greatly, blurring the lines between dystopian and utopian representations. I’m looking forward to crafting my paper using the sources provided; it will definitely be a challenging, but amusing experience!
