Week 8 Reflection

This week’s class was short and focused on media literacy. Due to the technical difficulties with the projector we could not listen to the two remaining myth presentations, but we were able to dive into media literacy and view Dr. Wexler’s PPT on our individual computers. “The  medium is the message” served as the guiding factor in the discussion of media and remediation; I particularly enjoyed our discussion on immediacy and hypermediacy and the various goals associated with each, which definitely allowed  me to critically analyze the style of visual representations in our daily lives.
I hope we can finish our remaining presentations today and fully get into “media literacy” mode before our perfectly aligned two weeks off.

Week 7 Reflection

This week’s class session was all about myths--and was truly engaging and informative. Although I was sick and doing my best to be heard, my group presentation went well--it was wonderful to work with Kaitlin and Lisette. We chose to present the contradictory character of the Hindu goddess, Kali--who was presented as beautiful/terrible, victim/victimizer, a true paradox.
I enjoyed the other two group presentations and especially valued the historical context that was provided before the analysis of each particular myth. I’m looking forward to the remaining presentations on Monday!

Week 6 Reflection

This week's session was interactive and productive! My group and I had the chance to discuss our myth of Kali Beheaded and create a plan of attack. We discussed the importance of providing the context of the female divine before explicating Kali, and became immersed in the complexities of Hinduism. It's truly difficult to do any of the myths justice in the thirty minute presentations, for they all contain a plethora of references, nuances, and complexities which go beyond the mere words in our text, but introducing the basics will surely enhance our myth-knowledge and further our interests. I am looking forward to today's presentations!

Week 5 Reflection

Our 2/25/13 class session was illuminating since we had the opportunity to hear the poetic talents of our fellow classmates. Following a nervous silence, I decided to share my two poems as well—and am glad I did since our class environment is very welcoming! The second half of class was particularly intriguing as we began to dive into the depths of mythology. My group has decided to explore The Feminine Divine and specifically the Hindu myth of Kali Beheaded.-which I’m truly looking forward to!
